How to Replace Disc Brake Pads

by Levi Bloom

This tutorial will show you how to replace the brake pads in the Avid BB7 mechanical disc brake (one of the most common disc brake systems.)

Step 1: Spread the pads.

Turn the inboard pad adjuster knob (the one closest to the spokes) counterclockwise until it stops. Then you can pull out the old pads. (But save the spring.)

Step 2: Insert spring between pads.

Place the spring between the new pads.

Step 3: Insert pads into brake.

Now squeeze the new pads together (holding the little end tabs) and slide them into the brake caliper until they click into place.

Make sure the pad marked "R" is going on the spoke-side of the brake caliper.

Then adjust your brakes and go ride.
